How to get back your privacy online

Tuesday 20 June 2017, by TorTor

Since the Snowden revelations, people could not ignore anymore privacy issues online. There has been extensive coverage, both technical and non-technical on how governments agencies around the world were spying their citizens online.

However not much has been written on how to effectively and very simply protect yourself from such threat in order to gain back the most basic freedoms that all human beings deserve.

To preserve freedom across time, it is important that every person using the internet do what they can to preserve their privacy, even if it is very little.

Here we will introduce the Tor Browser.

When using HTTPS to visit Wikipedia the computers relaying the data between your computer and Wikipedia can know:

  • The website that you access (en.wikipedia.org)
  • The hour at which you access this website
  • The location from which you access it
  • The computer and browser that you use

The Tor browser solves this problem by making the visitor of the website anonymous to the website itself, and hides what website is being visited from the computers relaying the data between your computer and the website you are visiting.
